Prof. Roger WalshTo increase community awareness about this issue that impacts all of us, AAUW-LB is co-sponsoring an important presentation by Professor Roger Walsh, of the Dept. of Psychiatry at UC Irvine on the topic of Healthy Lifestyle: What Research Tells Us About Optimizing Well Being.

Professor Walsh will explore the concept of Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes (TLCs) and show how making realistic, affordable, accessible changes in everyday living can alleviate many kinds of distress, both psychological and physical. In fact, hundreds of research studies demonstrate that TLC’s can be as effective as either medication or psychotherapy for some common disorders such as insomnia and depression, and even retard some of the intellectual loss associated with aging. TLCs also usually offer the advantages of being: inexpensive, free of side effects, of benefit to mind and body—and enjoyable!

So what lifestyle changes are helpful? Dr. Walsh discusses eight that are particularly beneficial to both mental and physical health: exercise, diet, time in nature, relationships, recreation, relaxation and stress management, religious or spiritual involvement, and service to others. Did you know that exercise is as good for the brain as it is for the heart? That meditation can increase brain size as well as improve calm and empathy? That the effects of diet on mental health can be transmitted across generations? That helping others may actually extend your life span?

The event is co-sponsored by AAUW Laguna Beach and The Woman's Club of Laguna Beach. The public is invited. Join us to learn some fascinating facts about how you can optimize your own well-being. As Dr. Walsh notes, given the enormous mental, physical, social and economic costs of today’s lifestyles, therapeutic lifestyles may need to be a central focus of mental, medical and public health in the 21st century.
